About the Author

Nancy I. Sanders grew up on a Pennsylvania dairy farm that has been in her family since before the American Revolution. Now she lives in southern California where she enjoys researching and writing about the important contributions men and women made during the founding years of our country. She is the author of over 75 books including A Kid’s Guide to African American History (2007, Second Edition, Chicago Review Press). Her picture book, D is for Drinking Gourd: An African American Alphabet (illustrated by E. B. Lewis, 2007, Sleeping Bear Press) is winner of the 2007 NAPPA Honors Award and the 2008 IRA Teachers’ Choice Award. It was also selected as a 2007 Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People and was a finalist in the USABooksNews.com Best Books 2007 Awards.
E.B. Lewis is the award-winning illustrator of such books as Virgie Goes to School with Us Boys by Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard, which was a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Book, and This Little Light of Mine.
